Joint Designs

13.03.16

After researching different methods of joining materials I began to design some trials to Lasercut. Although my interest for this project is around forms of three dimensional text I designed more simple shapes to test with the laser cutter. This will help me to determine what will work effectively when creating more complex designs later in the process.

Joint Research

I looked into various techniques of how to create joints that won't need additional fastening. By researching different methods it helped me to grasp how 3-D shapes could be both created and assembled from a 2-D material and also how I might set up an illustrator file for laser cutting with the least amount of wasted material. In studio we discussed tolerances when cutting shapes that fit together which will be something to consider when it comes to laser cutting my designs.

Between studio time and independent study I began trailing some three dimensional sketches on Illustrator. I am relatively unfamiliar with the programme so watched a range of tutorials via lynda.com. These really helped me to grasp the basics and begin playing around with different shapes and tools. The resulting sketches are inspired by my mood boards.

Moodboard#2

Moodboard

03.03.16

During the first session of Digital Fabrication I created a mood board for the assignment. It includes designs and images that interest me and aims to reflect my chosen course of study - visual communication design. The images that resonate with me most are the different forms of text and typography that I've included. The three-dimensional effects and textures make them far more engaging.
